The recording industry closes year 2025 with very good results that translate into an increase of 13.7%, with total revenues of 409.5 million euros in “industry value”, that represent retail value of 674.5 million euros as total market value.

This is the global figure that opens the economic balance published today by PROMUSICAE –entity gathering more than 95% of the Spanish recording market–, detailing sales of digital and physical format music in “trade value” (excluding VAT and distribution margins) instead of market value (as has traditionally been reported), in line with the way they are presented globally; as well as synchronisations (use of music in advertising or audio visual works) and the revenues from artists and producers’ intellectual property rights collective management.

From the global income figures, 84% comes from sales of music in general, 347.7 million that place the industry in 2003 historic peak, though still 26% below the all-time high level of 2001, already surpassed by our surrounding countries and, in words of PROMUSICAE’s president Antonio Guisasola «with which we are still struggling in Spain due to the low penetration of music consumption through paid subscriptions».

Digital market accounts for more than 87.9% of music sales in Spain (302 million) in a year that saw physical sales, leaded by vinyl, rising a non-insignificant 31.6% from 2024 (with 41.7 million).

Streaming continues to be the primary form of music consumption.

Streamed music consumption in Spain continued to grow during 2025, accounting for virtually 300 million euros for the industry and rising 13%(*) from 2024, with 99.2% of digital sales. From streaming revenue, 71.3% is driven by paid subscription accounts, with 214 million euros; whereas 28.7% belongs to both audio and video add-supported streaming, contributing 86 million euros which according to last music consumption figures available would represent 60% of such total consumption, however contributing to a lesser extent to the industry revenues, as we can see.

It is important to note that most of the growth is due to the revenue generated by premium subscribers, which increased by 19.2% regarding 2024, but still leaves us far from the utilization level of these tiers of other countries in the neighbourhood.

These figures mean that in 2025 over 21 million Spaniards accessed their preferred music through audio streaming platforms, and that more than 8 million subscribed to premium services, that is 18% more than in the previous year, continuing the trend of steady growth over recent years.

Even though figures are positive, it should not be overlooked that those 8 million subscribers in Spain are far behind the levels seen in markets most focused on consumption of recorded music, where it happens mostly in paid services that allow consumers to enjoy greater advantages and services in music platforms, enhancing user experience and ensuring better compensation to music creators.

The rest of the digital market comes from permanent downloads and sales of mobile products that, although yet declining, provide 2.2 million euros all together.

Physical market increases in 2025, mostly driven by vinyl

2025 has been a year of growth for physical market, rising 31.6% compared to 2024. From the total 41.7 million of the physical market, vinyl already represents 69% of sales, with 30% increase of units sold (2.18 million units in 2025 compared to 1.67 million of 2024), contributing with 28.9 million euros, 44.9% more than 19.9 million of 2024. Consumers’ interest for vinyl, as pieces that connect them with their most-loved artists, certifies the record companies’ efforts to offer fans unique and outstanding creativity works.

As per the rest of physical formats, all except video provide increases in 2025, with a rise of 9.1% in CD sales (contributing with 12.6 million euros up from 11.6 million of 2024) and 1.67 million units sold. Other formats grew 14.9%, with a contribution of 1.1 million euros, whereas video formats dropped by 7.8% with 84 million euros provided to the sales of physical formats.

Other sources of market revenues

The contribution of the intellectual property rights has seen an increase in 2025, growing 9.2% and representing 61.5 million euros, according to the figures provided by AGEDI in CD sales –phonographic producers’ intellectual property rights collecting society.

Meanwhile, revenues from music synchronisations for audio-visual productions and advertising provided 4.3 million euros, with an increase of 2.2% regarding 2024.

Recording industry overview

For PROMUSICAE’s president Antonio Guisasola, «the growth of the recording industry in 2025, not only is good news for the sector economically, but it also confirms that the efforts and investments made by recording companies in Spain to accompany Spanish artists’ talent and creativity, are generating returns that bring results back to 2003 levels, making the peaks of 2001 appear within reach… it was about time».

He states that «consumers’ interest about music is clear, and it is necessary to keep reinforcing the streaming model, which in exchange of a more than reasonable price grants access to a complete music library that is with us in all our daily activities. This reinforcement happens through expanding into other subscription formats, so that the sector benefits from its efforts and investments, as it does in neighbouring markets».

Guisasola emphasises that «surprising as it is, given the digital landscape and the easy access to content, piracy remains an important problem for the music industry, with rising 34% of pirate consumers, which represents 722 million euros loss of profit for the industry, according to details of the Observatory of Piracy of the Coalition of Creators and Content Industries».

He ends saying that «public sector support is much needed to ensure a safe framework where the Spanish recording industry can keep investing in the development of new talent, relying on benefits such as tax incentives which remain not applicable to recorded music, as well as other backing to recording production of emerging artists and the decisive support to international promotion of Spanish music».

(*) This growth of streaming and, in general, of the digital market is explained to a small extent (1.2%) due to a methodological change in the formula to calculate the amount of income of a market section. Should we isolate this effect, the growth would have been 11.5% instead of 12.7% reflected in revenues.
